Schedule II
Prescriptive Privilege Update
To Our Members:
**** GOOD NEWS ABOUT SCHEDULE IIs!!!****
The law allowing us to write for schedule II controlled substances has
gone into effect Thursday, 12/13/07. In order to write for schedule II
controlled substances, you must update your DEA registration to include
this category of drugs. According to Stephen Hanse, our lobbyist, the DEA
has upgraded their on-line system for updating registrations to include
schedule II controlled substances. The link, to the best of our knowledge,
is: https://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/webforms/jsp/regapps/common/updateLogin.jsp
Until you have
proof that you have updated your registration, you cannot write for
schedule II controlled substances.
To help with your notifying appropriate people in your hospital or
practice, see the members only section of the NYSSPA web site (www.nysspa.org)
for a letter from the DOH and a copy of the pharmacy newsletter regarding
schedule II prescription writing by PAs. You should notify your
supervising physicians of this new privilege as it is a delegated function
like all else that we do.
Everyone needs to know the rules on prescribing schedule II controlled
substances. They can be found at: http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/phforum/nycrr10.htm.
Click "Search Title 10", and enter "80".
This moment is another positive one of which we should all be proud.
The NYSSPA leadership and membership again has achieved, through our
legislative efforts, another milestone for PAs. Without the efforts of all
involved, this would not have been possible. This legislation will not
only allow for improved patient care, but should open job opportunities
for PAs across the state, especially in areas like pain management.
It is because of your NYSSPA membership that we are able to make these
accomplishments. Thank you! If you have colleagues who are not members,
please encourage them to join our team so we can continue the work we do
benefiting all the PAs in our state. This legislation should answer any
questions about what NYSSPA has done lately!
Let's all work together for the good of our great profession!
